Well what the hell is going on with the weather?
I have been hearing news about a major winter storm going through North America, so of course I looked it up and it looks like a huge storm. It doesn't look like Alberta is getting hit too bad, but I'm not 100% sure. Since my parents are living in Mesa Arizona, I had a look and from all accounts they are freezing their navels off, navel oranges that is. So Mom and Dad, if you are reading this could ya let me know you're not frozen? Then again being good Canadians they are probably bitching that the golf course is closed. :)
Closer to me, we are getting more rain than I have ever seen, I mean it's bloody biblical, I'm sure I saw some locusts trying to swim in a stream on the road out front, with Pestilence rowing along behind. The end of January and now the beginning of February has been the wettest weather I can remember, and the flooding is scary, nowhere near me though, in KL the drains work for all but the worst weather.
Segamat, incidentally where my parents lived when they were over here, had 60,000 people displaced from their homes. I have been listening to the news and just shaking my head and wondering why people don't just move. Johor, the Northern most state in Malaysia, is prone to flooding and about every 3 years or so has a major flood. There was major flooding in 2006 as well, in most of the same place as this year, but I don't remember KL being this wet.
The biggest issue with the rain in KL is that wherever you need to go takes sometime 10 times as long. The other day we were going to a mall thats normally a 15 minute drive with heavy traffic and it took almost an hour and a half to get there and there's no way to tun back once you get on the freeway.
I've dug up some images from the flooded areas (shamelessly stolen yet again).
This picture was taken in Segamat, at the railway station, the flooding has caused the track bed to sink and distort the tracks, because of the track damage there has been no train service to the South (Singapore). Some of the hardest hit towns have been evacuated and sent to flood relief centers, as I mentioned, 60 thousand people were evacuated in Johor alone. Melaka and other ares were hit with slightly less severity, displacing 10,000, although some accounts claim more than 50,000. We won't know the totals until after they go home.
The rest of these photos are from Johor, mainly Segamat, that was hit worse than any other area.
Flooding is very common over here and Malaysians don't really let it get them down, there is always some way to make it all work. Malaysians outside the major cities, KL, as a whole are pretty resourceful, and don't let a little water ruin their day. As you can see, when its wet, Malaysians just adapt and make due with what they have.
Some like these people take the flood as an excuse for a little swim and bath, most Malaysians don't have a bath tub, they use showers so a nice soak is always welcome. One thing I have to say for most rural Malaysians, they are always willing to smile, every Kampong (small village/town) I have been to the locals were always ready for a smile, until they see me with my wife. Malay's don't like to see Malay women with Westerners.
Well for everyone in the cold, stay warm and try to enjoy the white snow and remember that somewhere there's someone worse off and still smiling.
Cheers
